Net-Zero Home in Round Rock

Net-zero energy home -- the first green rated home in Round Rock

From the street, it looks like a perfect ordinary craftsman style home. But this is a net-zero energy custom home. There's nothing like it anywhere in the neighborhood.

The homeowners found an infill lot in suburban Round Rock and set about to work with the Solluna design/build team to plan a home that's elegant in its simplicity and style.

Clever design by Debra Blessman of Select Home Design makes this 1,444 square foot home seem bigger than it is. Two bedrooms and an office open directly from the open, vaulted ceiling great room. Windows are placed to bring light and breezes into the home. A metal roof, spray foam insulation, and wide eaves protect against heat gain in summer. Cool interior colors and a stained concrete floor add to the home's sense of simple beauty and comfort.

This is a net zero energy home, which means that over the course of a year, it produces as much energy as it uses, even while charging an electric car in the garage. A geothermal heat pump provides heating, cooling, and a substantial portion of the home's hot water needs. A solar photovoltaic system produces electricity. A rainwater collection system irrigates the landscape, which is planted in drought-tolerant native species and vegetables for the home.

The charming home, now a gathering place for the neighborhood, is the result of careful team planning, thoughtful design, and deliberate choices that make it super energy efficient, comfortable, and delightfully liveable for its owners.
