Damn near net-zero home for Travis Audubon

Travis Audubon’s 715-acre Baker Sanctuary near Leander provides mature hardwood-juniper woodland habitat for the Golden-cheeked Warbler, an endangered songbird.  It’s a beautiful tract of land adjacent to the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.

When Travis Audubon decided to build a residence for the land steward and his family, they chose the design/build team of Solluna Builders and Select Home Design to plan and build the project.

We all shared the same passions:

  • Respect for the land.

  • A clean, simple aesthetic that suits the property’s location and history.

  • Careful planning.

  • A focus on design and construction for sustainability and longevity.

The near net-zero home has three bedrooms, and office, and two baths comprising 1,747 square feet. A wide front porch and screened rear porch extend the living space into the beautiful, natural surroundings.

Over the span of a year, the 7.97 kW grid-tied solar photovoltaic system will provide most – and probably all – of the home’s energy needs.

The project included construction of an 1,800 square foot maintenance and equipment barn. A 30,000-gallon rain water system collects water from both house and barn. The rain water tank was filled to the brim by the time the family moved into their home.

The home was designed and oriented for breezes and natural light. Front and back porches and wide eaves offer protection against solar heat gain. The result is a comfortable, pleasant, light-filled home.
